Both principal god is the Senju Kanze Bodhisattva, thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara, who saves people from troubles in this life.

Historically, the 50th Emperor Kammu worshiped this Bodhisattva had sent a buddhist priest to SADO Island in 805 hoping that people here could pray for it even on the island.

And this priest found light in the river, followed it and spent a night at the bottom of a pine tree.

Next morning, a god appeared in fornt of him and said, “This is the land of saddness. If you establish a temple and put statue here, I will make your wishes come true.”

So he made it happen.

After he told this story to the emperor, he was so happy and made him to establish it in 808.

This is also one of the pilgrim spots of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune.
